How to catch Muskellunge in Ontario

The fish of 10,000 casts — Ontario's apex freshwater predator. Big baits, big gear, and a deep respect for releasing a fish that takes decades to grow.
When to fish
Catchable all open-water season, but late summer and fall produce the biggest fish as they feed up for winter.
Where to find them
Weed edges, rock bars, deep points, and open-water bait near structure. Muskie relate to the biggest, best structure on the lake.
How to catch them
Large bucktails, gliders, crankbaits, and rubber baits — and always a figure-8 at the boat.
Gear
A heavy muskie rod, 80–100 lb braid, a fluorocarbon or wire leader, and proper release tools: big net, jaw spreaders, long pliers, cutters.
Pro tip
Have your release gear out before you cast. Quick photo, support the fish, and let her swim — muskie are too rare and slow-growing to waste.
