How to catch Smallmouth Bass in Ontario

Pound for pound the hardest-fighting fish in Ontario. Smallmouth love rock, current, and crayfish, and they'll test your tackle.
When to fish
Late-spring pre-spawn fish hold shallow on rock; summer bronzebacks set up on deeper structure. They feed best in warm, stable water.
Where to find them
Rocky points, shoals, current breaks, and drop-offs near deep water. Clear lakes and rivers with rock and gravel are smallmouth country.
How to catch them
Tubes, Ned rigs, and drop-shots on rock; jerkbaits and topwater early and late. Match crayfish colours — brown, green-pumpkin, craw.
Gear
A medium spinning rod with 8–10 lb fluorocarbon is ideal for finesse rock presentations.
Pro tip
Let a hooked smallmouth run rather than horsing it — they jump and throw hooks. Down-size in clear water.
